The only thing that stays the same about my teaching philosophy from year to year is change. I'm always open to new ideas and new methods, and every student is different. My goal is simple--I want to help my students become complete musicians. As a performing bassist AND drummer, I've had the unique opportunity to see these two closely related instruments from both the inside out AND the outside in. This perspective colors everything I do as a teacher. I have clear and effective methods for developing solid technique and coordination, but I am a firm believer that a complete music education consists of much more than mechanics. I make an effort in every lesson to connect the material to the music, by providing real-world advice about how to function in a band, how to interpret charts and songs, and which recordings to check out. Most of all, I have fun when I teach, and I like to think that my students do too.
